Neither are Purāṇas disconnected from the Vedas nor are they just “mythological stories” Hold on..let me explain You often hear that Purāṇas are random tales with no connection to the Vedas This is how mlecchas have chosen to view them But the rishis said something else If the Vedas drop the core principles, then Purāṇas expand those same principles in narrative form..adding history, structure, context & practical illustration, so society can understand them easily n preserve this knowledge across generations Upaniṣads themselves declare that 'Purāṇas are to be regarded as the Fifth Veda' For ex, see Chāndogya Upaniṣad 7.1.2 Not convinced? Lemme give a concrete ex The most famous hymn of the Ṛgveda, Puruṣa Sūkta (10.90.3), states that material creation (entire manifested universe) is only 1/4 of Supreme Reality (Parabrahman) & remaining 3/4 is the spiritual realm The same principle is repeated in the Bhāgavata Mahāpurāṇa (2.6.20), with further explanation of how Nārāyaṇa / Viṣhṇu governs the 3/4 spiritual realm & manifests himself within the 1/4 material universe Even what Kṛṣṇa reveals in the Bhagavad Gītā during the vision of the Viśvarūpa reflects the same vedic understanding..which also appears in the Nāsadīya Sūkta & Puruṣa Sūkta of the Ṛgveda My point is simple The Purāṇas exist to explain the core truths of the Vedas in full depth They describe: how creation unfolds..who Parabrahman is..philosophy & metaphysics..devotion..cosmology time cycles & much more They even preserve detailed historical memory complete lineages of the Sūryavaṁśa and Chandravaṁśa, which rishis & kings lived in which ages, in which dynasties Rāma and Kṛṣṇa were born..from ancient times to the Rāmāyaṇa & Mahābhārata eras sometimes Purāṇas even discuss scientific knowledge For ex, Śiva Purāṇa describes human Anatony development from conception to pregnancy & fetal growth And Bhāgavata Purāṇa clearly states what qualifies a text to be called as “Purāṇa” the structure shown in the infographic above But we are told to dismiss all this as random myths
