Jawaharlal Nehru & other congress leaders voting for Partition of India & Creation of Pakistan. Indira Gandhi, Dr. Rajendra Prasad, and Govind Ballabh Pant are seen in the background - June 1947. Mahatma Gandhi did not participate in the vote for the partition of India. Other Congress leaders, including Jawaharlal Nehru, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, and others, reluctantly accepted partition as the only viable solution to avoid civil war and chaos due to growing Hindu-Muslim tensions. The vote on the partition of India took place during a meeting of the All India Congress Committee (AICC) on 14 June 1947 at the AICC headquarters in Delhi, specifically at Gandhi Smriti Bhawan, which was then known as Birla House or Birla Bhavan. Both Nehru & Gandhiji vehemently opposed partition of United India until the very end when other congress leaders like Vallabhbahi Patel convinced them to support partition for the greater stability of India’s future.
